Older incumbent telcos such as Bharti Airtel, Vodafone India and Idea Cellular, through COAI, have said Trai’s latest rules favour newcomer Jio.
According to the order, predatory pricing henceforth would be determined on the basis of average variable cost and whether there is intention to kill competition.
"Government would outline its spectrum pricing goals and objectives in NTP2018 to be in sync with the rest of the world on this score," Sinha said.
Jio, on Friday, issued a defamation notice to COAI demanding a public apology within 48 hours for saying that the telecom regulator favoured Jio through its regulations
"Huawei Balong 5G01 is the world's first 3GPP 5G commercial chipset with peak rate of 2.3 GBPS (gigabit per second)," Huawei CEO , Consumer Business Group, Richard Yu said.
"We are still examining Jio’s letter and are in discussions with our legal counsel and our members to take a call on whether a response is warranted”, said Mathews.
The desperation in Indian telecom sector, which is saddled with Rs 7 lakh-crore debt and is in the throes of brutal price wars, is rising by the day.
COAI today said its members are evaluating legal options and may also approach the DoT and the PMO on their grievances against the regulator's decision on predatory pricing.
In a recent tariff order, Trai dropped the data traffic volumes metric for assessing whether a telco is an SMP, and restricted the definition to a telco’s mobile revenue and subscriber market shares only.
Some incumbents may shortly seek a clarification from the government on the matter, although this was not independently confirmed by the big phone companies.
