Experts believe that farmers might get less returns for their produce if dairies are unable to export milk powder or divert it to government schemes like the mid-day meal scheme.
Wheat planting fell by 4.02% to 298.67 lakh hectare, as on January 19. As on date, yellow rust has not been reported across the wheat sown area.
The continued dry weather conditions and maximum temperatures being above normal over parts of north-west and central India were a concern for traders as it could impact yield and the quality of crop.
“This year ‘krishi vikas’ (agriculture expansion) will be good. It will easily grow to over 4% when the final estimates are released,” the minister said.
Farmers and traders said the only way out was to heavily step up government procurement of grains and allow export of onions to support prices.
Industry sources said that post GST reforms, states have been slow on spending on micro irrigation, but were confident that the funds would be utilised in the coming quarter.
