The model is currently functional in 30 universities and costs $400 (Rs 28,407) per student per year.
MUMBAI: US -based online learning platform Coursera on Thursday launched 'Coursera on Campus', a model that can be used by universities across the globe to use content available on the platform and integrate it within their own curriculum.

In many universities where the model has been launched, subscribing to the model has been linked with earning of extra credits as well as an upgradation of the degree being pursued- for example from a simple major degree in a subject to an honours degree.

"This will incentivise students to subscribe to this model as not only are they able to add on job-relevant skills like machine learning, deep learning etc, it will also reflect in a more relevant degree," Jeff Maggioncalda, CEO at Coursera told ET in an interaction.

"Features such as single sign-on, API integration, gradebooks, and plagiarism detection will help universities seamlessly incorporate online learning into their on-campus programs," Coursera said in a release.

Coursera’s 2019 Global Skills Index found that two-thirds of the world’s population is falling behind in critical skills. Higher education globally is gearing up to address this crisis, but many universities are constrained by the capacity of their on-campus programs and the challenge of recruiting expert faculty required to launch new programs.

“Coursera for Campus gives universities the ability to quickly respond to the demands of a rapidly changing economy. With access to content from 200 of the world’s top universities and industry educators, higher education institutions can easily enhance their existing curricula with critical digital skills and author online courses to keep pace with what employers need," said Maggioncalda.

The model is currently functional in 30 universities and costs $400 (Rs 28,407) per student per year.

Maggioncalda said Coursera for Campus can also be used by teachers of universities to use the portal for publish private lessons while they access programs by partner universities. The chief executive of the ed tech platform now valued at more than $1 billion said that if the privately circulated programs are of the required standard, the platform could consider making it available publicly on its platform as well. This may give Indian universities an opportunity to be able to publish programs that could be considered world class.

On Monday, Coursera announced that it has partnered with Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Calcutta that will roll out two MasterTrack certificate programs using the portal. Another Indian institute that is a partner is Indian School of Business.
