Telecom secretary Anshu Prakash Monday said that India's telecom industry is a key infrastructure sector which is critical for the success of Industry 4.0 and Digital India initiative.

Prakash was inaugurating a three-day India Mobile Congress (IMC) - 2019 in New Delhi.

"Telecom is a key infrastructure sector and critical for the success of Industry 4.0 and Digital India," the top official said and added that modern industries would ride on telecom networks.

The mega telecom industry event will also showcase fifth generation or 5G technology, according to Prakash, which he said would be a win-win situation for industry stakeholders.

On Monday, a three-day conclave kickstarted with policymakers such as telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad, Birla group's Kumarmanglam Birla, and Reliance Jio's board member Mahendra Nahata on board.

"This is a platform of coming together to showcase technology that can translate to the benefits of stakeholders, and to promote ease of living, ease of doing business and new employment opportunities," Prakash said.

Total footfall, according to him, is expected to be more than 100,000 with as many as 500 participating companies and 250 startups.

Prakash also read out a text message from Prime Minister Narendra Modi who said that this year's event theme was closely related to the lives of people.

IMC- 2019 has been organised by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) that represents Vodafone Idea, Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio.
