Budget 2020: More Tejas trains to connect iconic tourist destinations on the cards

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that more Tejas trains are on the cards to connect iconic tourist destinations. Electrification of 27,000 km of tracks is also planned.

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced that more Tejas trains are on the cards to connect iconic tourist destinations. Electrification of 27,000 km of tracks is also planned.

She also announced setting up a large solar powered capacity along side rail tracks on land ownd by raiwlays.

The Railways is likely to start corporatising its production from FY21. The 100 days action plan of the Railways had suggested hiving off seven production units of the railways into a single entity called Indian Railways Rolling Stock Company.

The railways has ramped up its efforts to modernise its infrastructure with an aim to run high-speed and semi-high speed trains.

“Ultimately, our production units will have to produce coaches and locos, which are fit for a speed of 160 kmph,” Railway Board chairman VK Yadav had said.

The national transporter's operating ratio target for FY20 was 95%. The Railways had reported its worst operating ratio at 98.44 per cent in 2017-18.

The Railways has identified six sections for high speed and semi-high speed corridors, Railway Board Chairman VK Yadav said on Wednesday. The new corridors will join the under-construction Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed route.
