The ministries of railways and road transport and highways have held meetings to explore how such corridors can be developed, senior government officials aware of the matter said.
“We have said that for greenfield expressways, we can look at the possibility of rail lines alongside,” an official told ET, asking not to be identified.
Five or six upcoming corridors, including Delhi-Amritsar-Katra and Chennai-Bengaluru, have been identified for such works.
“The railway ministry will get back on the feasibility of these projects,” a second official said. “There are issues in such projects, since the road and rail alignments are different.”
The projects will help the government save costs on land acquisition for greenfield expressways, the first official said.
“This is mostly about sharing common right of way,” the official added. “We have fixed our expressalignments and have asked the railways to see if they want to bring up a line alongside.”
Work on the Delhi-Amritsar-Katra expressway is being taken up on priority. The government approved a new alignment for the Delhi-Katra expressway in June, a project that costs Rs 25,000 crore.
This new expressway will provide the shortest way from the capital to Amritsar and other religious centres of Sultanpur Lodhi, Goindwal Sahib, Khadoor Sahib as well as the recently developed Dera Baba Nanak, Kartarpur Sahib International Corridor in Punjab.
Among other corridors proposed to be built by FY25 are Ahmedabad-Dholera, Kanpur-Lucknow, Amritsar-Bhathinda-Jamnagar, Hyderabad-Raipur and Nagpur-Vijayawada.

Hope that this govt stays in power for few more terms to complete these projects. Otherwise, a Cong govt will halt them all like it halted Eastern Peripheral and Western Peripheral expressways.
