NEW DELHI: Consulting firms are lining up for summer placements at B-school campuses, even as offers from FMCG, consumer durables companies and banks have dried up amid an economic downturn, according to placement cells at top business schools. Early data from B-school campuses that have wrapped up summer placements establishes the trend.

At XLRI, there has been a 37% increase in summer internship offers from consulting firms compared to last year, with the institute receiving 56 offers from such firms. At IIM Calcutta, three new consulting firms visited for the first time, even as Axis Bank, Yes Bank and Bank of Baroda —which visited last year — did not come in this time.

FMS Delhi, too, has seen a 14.3% rise in offers from theconsulting domain, compared to last year. Unlike last year, Yes Bank and ICICI Bank skipped summer placements at FMS this year. Offers from BFSI came down to 33 from 53 last year, while offers from FMCG were down to 36 from 41 last year.

At MDI Gurgaon, consulting has made up for the significant dip in the number of offers from manufacturing, especially the automotive sector, according to Kanwal Kapil, the dean of placements. A dozen consulting firms lined up at MDI compared to eight last year, with the offers rising 40% for summer placements from consulting companies.

BCG and PwC India were among the new recruiters. “Consulting firms are hiring more this year. Initial discussions with these firms indicate that their order books are full. Their clients are signing up for cost effectiveness,” said Amit Karna, chairperson-placements at IIM Ahmedabad.

IIM-A has closed placements for its one-year MBA programme. At IIM Bangalore, a total of 127 offers were made in the consulting domain, with top recruiters being Bain & Company (19), Accenture Strategy (18), Boston Consulting Group (13), AT Kearney (12) and McKinsey & Company (11), among others.

At IIM Kozhikode, there has been a surge in number of consulting companies hiring, with over 13% of the batch getting offers from Avalon Consulting, Accenture Strategy, BCG, Deloitte USI, E&Y, PwC and others.

The consulting sector made the highest number of offers at IIM Calcutta, too, with McKinsey, Bain, BCG, ATK, KPMG and EY participating. The top recruiter among consulting companies, Deloitte India, is looking to hire in large numbers. “Consulting as a service will always be required, irrespective of the business environment, perhaps even when the economic sentiment is muted.”said SV Nathan, partner, Deloitte India.
