CHENNAI: Indian Institute of Technology-Madras has said the first phase of campus placements for the year has fetched a total of 831 job offers from 184 employers who had lined up for the placement season.

Including the accepted Pre-Placement Offers (PPOs), a total of 848 students have already been placed at the end of Phase I Placements for 2019-20 Academic Year. This is around the same as last year (2018-19) when 844 students had been placed at the end of Phase I, the institute said.

The jobs include 34 offers to work from locations abroad, the institute said in a release.

Analytics, finance, consulting, core engineering and R&D constituted a large portion in the employer spectrum; IT jobs were a little under fourth of the pie.

Including the 167 pre-placement offers, the total number of jobs on offer falls just two short of the 1,000-jobs mark at the end of Phase I. This number increases to 1016 including the offers made to students of 2018-19 who re-registered for the current Phase I. The Phase II of Placements will begin in second half of January 2020, the institute said.

A total of 1,298 students had appeared for the placements during 2019-20, of which a little over a fifth were female students.

American software company Microsoft, chip design company Intel and Indian software services exporter TCS were the top recruiters.

Speaking about Phase I of Campus Placements, Prof. Manu Santhanam and Prof. C. S. Shankar Ram, Advisors (Placement), IIT Madras, said, “The Phase I Placement process at IIT Madras has once again been strong. We are optimistic to build on these numbers in the second phase of our Placement process. We have started preparations focussing on the Education sector for Phase II Placements.”
