What’s on the shopping list of the second richest person in the world? An electric car. Co-founder and former CEO of Microsoft, Bill Gates revealed that he just picked up a Porsche Taycan. In a chat with YouTuber Marques Brownlee, Gates said, “I have to say it’s a premium price car. It is very very cool. This is my first electric car and I am enjoying it a lot.”

Gates, who once said that tackling climate is going to take historic levels of global cooperation, said that while there are many areas that need work, passenger cars is one of the more hopeful areas. “Many car companies are moving super-fast when it comes to electric cars,” he added.

But are there any areas for improvement? Yes. “The range. If you want to go long distance, the pervasiveness of recharging and the time to recharge compared to filling up a time of gas. You spend less on electricity than gasoline, and the maintenance cost is a little bit less. Although the insurance is a little bit more. Clearly from all the climate areas, this one is the most hopeful.”

Gates already has an impressive car collection, and choosing an EV as his latest purchase says something important about the state of the electric market. “The green approach will cost people more than the dirty approach and so convincing people of the benefits of stopping these emissions means that you should be willing to pay extra for some of these activities. We might get the green premium to zero so you don’t pay any extra but because there are so many sources of emissions, some of them will be premium priced.”

About the car

The Taycan is Porsche’s first fully-electric car and is offered in two variants. That includes the Turbo and the Turbo S and both share a 93.4kWh lithium-ion battery. The Turbo is a range-oriented version, offering 381 to 450km on a full charge. The Turbo S is a sportier variant and offers less range in exchange for more performance.

The base model starts at $150,900 in the United States. Going for the more powerful Turbo S takes the price to $185,000. Porsche has equipped the Taycan with a pair of synchronous motors; one on each axle. The Turbo makes 670PS of maximum power while the Turbo S makes 751PS. Both cars have an equal torque of 850Nm.
