A Flight To The End
Most athletes spend a substantial amount of time in transit, jet-setting between various venues. But some of these journeys have gone awry, resulting in their untimely deaths.
The 28-year-old Argentinian striker had become Cardiff City’s club-record signing when he put pen to paper on January 18. After finishing his medical at the Premier League club, he flew back to Nantes to bid goodbye to his former teammates. However, on January 21, the private jet on which he was returning to the United Kingdom went missing over the Channel Islands. Sala, who was one of the two people, along with pilot David Ibbotson, on the flight, left a WhatsApp voice message suggesting his plane “feels like it’s falling to pieces”. The wreckage of the aircraft and Sala’s body were located a few days ago.

Hansie Cronje
In 2002, former South African cricket captain Hansie Cronje was one of three people who died when the light cargo aircraft on which he had hitched a ride crashed in into the Outeniqua mountains in the Western Cape province. Cronje, who was 32 at the time, had been working as an account manager for an engineering firm after being banned from international cricket on charges of match fixing. Aviation officials cited bad weather as the reason for the crash, but several conspiracy theorists speculated that the former cricketer was murdered.

Manchester United Players
Eight Manchester United players, died when their aircraft crashed just after take-off from the Munich airport in 1958. The United side, nicknamed the Busby Babes, were returning from Yugoslavia after knocking out Red Star Belgrade in the quarterfinals of the European Cup. The crash was attributed to ice that had accumulated on the runway at the time of take-off. The aircraft crashed through a fence and into a farm house nearby.
