Apple AirPods 2 review: Light, comfortable with new improvements

The device can pair and work with any Android phone or even a Windows laptop.

It’s an iconic design – instantly recognisable, endlessly copied and also extremely polarising. When the AirPods were first released in 2016, many found the design odd but they soon became a status symbol. The elongated stalks serve a big purpose too - they house the microphones away from the main speakers, contributing to the excellent call quality they are known for.

For the new iteration of the AirPods, Apple chose to keep things nearly identical. There are two main upgrades: the new wireless charging case and the new custom design H1 chip. In the first gen AirPods, the W1 chip enabled features we hadn’t seen in wireless Bluetooth earphones. Things like proximity detection and quick switching between all Apple devices that you’re signed into.

The new H1 chip keeps these features but adds improvements. Pairing with phones is noticeably faster. You only have to pair once, so not that big a deal right? But it also switches between connected devices a lot faster. H1 is more efficient too, so you get better battery life and talktime. And when connected to Apple device, you get hands-free ‘Hey Siri’ functionality (previously, you had to tap and hold the AirPod to wake Siri). They sound pretty much the same as before (maybe a tad louder). Most people will be pleased with the audio quality on offer. And yes, these will still pair and work with any Android phone or even a Windows laptop.

They still have an effortlessness about them: how light they are, how easily they fit and how comfortable they are. But they’re also just as prone to falling out with some people. We don’t recommend using them during a crowded train commute because losing one of them is heartbreaking. Finally, Apple could have easily set them apart with some new colours and finishes. Instead, it’s still a white, glossy plastic case. Visually, the wireless charging case has an external LED indicator & some very minor tweaks but that’s it!

If you’re not interested in the wireless charging case, you can get the AirPods 2 with a standard case for Rs 14,900. And if you are interested in wireless charging but don’t want to upgrade existing AirPods, you can just buy the standalone wireless charging case for Rs 7,500. It’s pricey but at least you have all the options.
