Get rid of clutter: Spring cleaning tips to make home brighter and airy
BENGALURU: This Diwali, upcoming Sandalwood actress Nimika Ratnakar is moving from her Banashankari residence to a new home in Uttarahalli in south Bengaluru. Since it is also the festive season which calls for a spring cleaning ritual, Ratnakar is leaving no stone unturned to get house-ready. She has booked a team of professional cleaners from an online home services platform to do the job.

“I live alone and my work schedules do not allow me to supervise domestic staff as efficiently as I would want to. Spring-cleaning is top priority during this season. Hiring professionals online is convenient,” said she.

If plumbers, carpenters and electricians have gone online, can home cleaners be far behind? This festive season, Bengalureans are the happier for it.

Surpiya Pal (34), a media sales professional, took this route to spring-clean her Cambridge Layout flat before Dasara. She paid Rs 6,000 but has no qualms about that. “There is no hassle of coordinating, convincing and negotiating. Since I am used to booking other online utilities like salon services, this was a natural progression,” said she.

Saran Chaterjee, CEO of, has been deploying a minimum of 300 teams of home cleaners on a day in Bengaluru in this season. On the weekends, it is about 1,000 teams. Bengaluru, apparently, is witnessing a 70% jump in the number of bookings for home cleaning during this time of the year.

“The demand for professional cleaning in Bengaluru is 3-4 times more than that in any other Indian city. The numbers have been doubling each year. The average spend too has increased from Rs 3,000 a year ago to Rs 5,000 per household this time,” said Chaterjee.

On the occasion of Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary, India's top bosses, cricketers and other personalities picked up brooms and pledged to make 'Clean India' or 'Swachhata Hi Seva' campaign a success.

Smaller players like too are raking in the moolah here. “Bengaluru is generating 50% more revenue than Hyderabad, Jamshedpur, Ranchi, Lucknow and Bokaro. The number of bookings per day has risen from 20 in January to about 80 now.”

Bengaluru’s huge population of time-pressed working couples from localities such as Whitefield, Sarjapur, JP Nagar, Indiranagar and Koramangala is the primary clientele.

Tracing the changing consumer pattern over the past three years in Bengaluru, Housejoy’s Chaterjee adds, “Early adopters were homeowners with bungalows in the city. The trend to get a festive renovation is now circuiting among tenants and those living in smaller homes and apartments too.”
