Blueair is a known name in air purifiers. For in-car use, they've shrunk their patended HEPASilent technology into a device that's just 20cm x 20cm x 10cm. There are a few key elements that set this Blueair apart from the traditional car air purifier: design, the CADR, filter size and the controller. In terms of design, it mounts behind the front seat (a mounting strap is included) for higher efficiency and doesn't take up any valuable space on the dashboard/seat/parcel tray. Next, the large fan inside gives it a CADR (clean air delivery rate) of 38 cubic metres per hour. It has the largest four-sided HEPA filter we've seen in a car purifier (it's four sided for 360-degree air intake). Finally, the control and LED indication lights are built into the 12V plug itself - you rotate the cap of the plug to adjust fan speed or switch to auto mode. PM2.5 levels in the car are shown by the colour and number of LEDs: six orange LEDs at the bad end of the spectrum and 6 blue LEDs at the good end.

They call it connected because it's compatible with the Blueair Friend app (available for iOS and Android). Once you download the app, it takes you through the process of connecting to the unit over Bluetooth. The app lets you control it and shows you more detailed information about air quality and usage.

We appreciate the amount of thought and attention to detail in the overall product design & philosophy. For instance, if you normally use the 12V socket of your car to charge your phone, no need to worry. There's a powered USB port on the Blueair power plug too. For larger vehicles, you can mount an additional Blueair purifier behind the second seat and power it from a cable connected to the first unit - very clever since most cars have only one 12V power outlet. The included power cable is over 14 feet (4.5m) long - which means you can plug it into the front dashboard and place the unit in a third row of seating as well. Another reason for the long cable is so that you can hide it by routing it under the seats and floor mats.

Blueair says filter life is about 6 months, based on a usage of 360 hours during that period. When the unit thinks it's time for a filter change, the control knob LEDs will flash red. You may also need to vacuum the air inlets with a soft brush and wipe down the insides. This maintenance is easy and takes just a couple of minutes. We found that it's effective in cleaning the air of a typical sedan in under 10 minutes. If you don't mind the expense and want the best in-car solution, this is what we recommend.
