EOS 80D, Canon’s popular digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera, has an upgrade now – the 90D, with the Japanese multinational betting big on mid-range camera market.

Priced at nearly Rs 1.28 lakh with an 18 mm-135 mm IS USM lens, the DSLR camera is not just for still images but also 4K cropped and uncropped videos.

So, is it a worthy deal?

90D pretty much hits a home run in terms of build. It look bulky but it isn’t actually. There is also ample gripping area for fingers. The weather-seal build also assures the user the body is built to last.

One gets all basic ports such as USB 2.0 with micro-USB connector, mic input, headphone out, high-definition multimedia interface and, of course, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

There is a three-inch liquid crystal display that can be rotated 360 degrees –a very useful feature. The screen gets an extra point for being touch-enabled. While touch to click is nifty, adding to its allure is an eight-way joystick button on the side, which we often used to adjust the focus points for a shot.

The image quality you get from the 32.5 megapixel (MP) advanced photo system type-C sensor is impressive. That is not just a bump up from 80D’s 24 MP sensor but also works in tandem with the excellent raw image detail capture, aggressive JPEG noise reduction, and well-spanned dynamic range.

Videographers will be delighted to see accurate and reliable autofocus, and, most importantly, the uncropped 4K/30p video capture.

While there’s no 24p shooting option in 1080 or 4K resolution, the 1080p video shooting looks more detailed than some competitors in the same segment, including Nikon D7500 and Fujifilm X-T30.

The battery life of 90D is longer as compared to the 80D, despite the more powerful sensor and higher resolution. You get over 1100 shots in a single charge, which is not bad at all.

So is 90D the right DSLR camera for you? Yes, if you travel a lot and want to simply whip out the camera and start clicking. It is also ideal for vlogging and street shots, but not best option for sports photography.
