Vocabulary maestro Shashi Tharoor shares how he learns new words.
Shashi Tharoor’s verbal prowess and oratory skills are, undoubtedly, a force to be reckoned with. That the 63-year-old politician is a master of vocabulary and extremely eloquent and articulate is a known fact.

Each time the politician tweets a new word, he ends up causing a furore on the Internet and most people end up wondering - how does the Congress MP learn new words, after all?

A 10th standard student who happened to attend one of Tharoor’s events had the same question in mind. He asked the MP to teach everyone an exotic word. "As you have been globally acknowledged as a man of vocabulary I would like you to give me and the crowd a new word for us to learn," she said.

The Thiruvananthapuram Congress MP, being his witty best, gave a well thought-out response which was funny and inspiring at the same time.

‘I’ll give you a very simple and an old word, Read!’, said Tharoor. The MP also cleared the common misconception that he is a ‘nutcase’ who studies dictionary all the time.

Contrary to what people think, the politician said he rarely opens the dictionary. Delving deeper into the subject, Tharoor revealed that he had been an asthamatic child and more often than not, he was confined indoors.

As a result, the MP took to books and read extensively. Elaborating on the same, Tharoor said that encountering the same word in 3 different books, in 3 different contexts enabled him to learn the meanings, thereby enhancing his vocabulary.

Several users on the Internet nodded in agreement with Tharoor and were left in awe of his knowledge.

This Twitter user found Tharoor’s advice similar to that of his father.

Tharoor’s advice resonated with the young ones in the crowd and with the entire Twitterverse. It will be interesting to see the Congress MP coming up with new words in the near future.
