Oktoberfest, an annual folk festival held in Munich, and famous for the copious amounts of beer consumed during the fest’s duration is a bucket list item for many travellers. The festive spirit that’s infused into the atmosphere with thousands descending to partake in the revelry transforms the city into one big party.

And throwing in their hat into this party ring were some famous faces from the Indian business fraternity this year. Marico’s Harsh Mariwala, JSW Group’s Sajjan Jindal and Delta Corp’s Jaydev Mody said prost (German for cheers) in one of the tents at the fest earlier this month.

“We were a group of seven (at the fest). We planned about three - four months in advance, since getting tickets is quite difficult, and we had to align all our diaries,” Mariwala told ET Panache, when discussing his first time at the Oktoborfest. “The entire city is buzzing. It’s one big party, with thousands congregating,” he added.

What he did find surprising though was that there aren’t multiple beers to sample. It’s one standard beer that is served with eats on the side. That has something to do with the way the fest is organised. Visitors can book themselves a spot at one of the many big (seating almost 4,000 to 5,000 people) tents, with a choice for indoor as well as outdoor seating at most. Each tent is run by a different brewery and has curated music and entertainment options.

“What’s fascinating is watching the servers balance their trays, laden with five - six glasses of beer, each with a capacity of a litre. It’s amazing how they do it. The whole experience is really,” Mariwala concluded. An experience to remember really.

Beer Talk

Beer can be called the drink for all seasons, and reasons. Whether you're chilling at a sports bar with friends or out for a brunch, the many varieties of beer make it possible to pair the drink with any food. From lagers to India Pale Ale (IPAs), beer lists continue to grow on menus. Beer can be broadly classified as an ale or a lager; then depending on their flavours and styles they can be India Pale Ales (IPA), pilsners, porters, stouts, and wheat and Belgian beers, among others. While the major difference between various beers is the yeast and the temperature they are fermented at, here's a list to help you show-off your beer knowledge the next time you head out.
