2020, the year of the ‘new normal’ was marked by several firsts. For the first time in the history of the Indian film industry, films didn’t see theatrical releases for almost 7 months after the Covid-19 pandemic hit in March.

With the global population locked indoors, the producers of films were in a fix - how to make movies reach the audience when theatres are shut? That’s when the OTT (Over-The-Top Content) platforms came to their rescue.

Several films began streaming online on OTT platforms as viewers tuned in through their laptops and mobile devices, from the comfort of their homes to watch good cinema.

While it may not be fair to compare the films released this year as the medium of release is different, there were some films which left a mark on the audience and charmed them. Here they are:

    ‘Angrezi Medium’

Probably the last Bollywood film to run in theatres pre-Covid and the last film starring late actor Irrfan Khan, ‘Angrezi Medium’ could only rake in a humble Rs 13.54 cr at the box office when it released on March 13. Due to its sales being impacted by Covid-19, it later saw a digital release on Disney+Hotstar and that was when it received critical acclaim.

The word-of-mouth played a key role in making the film popular among the audience and now ‘Angrezi Medium’ is considered one of the finest films of 2020 with a 7.3 rating out of 10 on IMDb.

The comedy-drama film received mixed reviews from critics but generally positive reviews from the audience. While the exact number of people who watched the film on Amazon Prime Video isn’t available, the film has a decent rating of 6.3 out of 10 on IMDb.

    ‘Dil Bechara’

The demise of Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput in June this year, sent shockwaves throughout the nation. Almost a month later, the Mukesh Chhabra-directorial film was released on Disney+Hotstar and received a thunderous response from the audience.

When the film’s trailer was released on YouTube on July 6 by Fox Star Hindi, it made a record of ‘most liked trailer’ surpassing ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Avenger: Endgame’.

The film registered a whopping 95 mn views on Disney+Hotstar in the first 24 hours which, some experts estimated, is equivalent to Rs 2,000 cr collection on the opening day. ‘Dil Bechara’ also went on to become a top-rated film on IMDb with 9.8/10 rating.

    ‘Ludo’

The Indian anthology dark comedy film was, perhaps, the perfect way to bid farewell to 2020. Directed by Anurag Basu and starring Pankaj Tripathi and Rajkummar Rao, the film was scheduled to release in theatres in April but due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it released on Netflix on Diwali.

The film became a huge hit among the audience who lauded the film’s narrative and storyline, Rao and Tripathi’s performances. While the exact number of people or accounts which streamed the film on Netflix might not be available, it is not difficult to gauge the popularity of the film given the IMDb rating of 7.6 out of 10.
