Honouring the best in architecture: Kohler Bold Design Awards was a sparkling night at the Royal Opera House

The biennial awards by Kohler seek to recognise the best of Indian design and architecture.

The biennial Kohler Bold Design Awards were awarded in a sparkling ceremony at the Royal Opera House, Mumbai. The awards seek to recognise the best of Indian design and architecture. In a very short span of time, the awards have come to be known as the preeminent celebration of excellence in these fields. This year’s edition saw 11 Golden Pencils up for grabs, including the prestigious John Michael Kohler Lifetime Achievement Award, which seeks to recognise the outstanding achievements in Indian design and architecture.

Given the immense talent competing for the honours, the star-studded jury was drawn from distinguished names around the world such as Abha Narain Lambah, Chitra Vishwanath, Fabio Novembre, Jimmy Lim, Kamal Malik, Pankaj Vir Gupta, Paola Navone, Sharukh Mistry and Sunita Kohli.

The awardees at this year’s Kohler Bold Design Awards ceremony bested their contemporaries and included stalwarts such as Sanjay Puri, Verendra Wakhloo, Karan Grover, Smaran Mallesh, Saurabh Malpani, Samir Raut, Abin Chaudhry, Swarup Dutta, Ankur Choksi, Tony Joseph, Ketan Jawdekar, Dhananjay Shinde, Krishan V and Parvez Charania.

In addition, the Kohler Bold Design Awards extended the prestigious John Michael Kohler Lifetime Achievement Award to Raj Rewal. The jury recognised Rewal as an architect and urban design consultant whose humanist approach to architecture has global influences while seamlessly integrating cultural nuances and traditions. The jury deemed his dedication to and appreciation of these essential elements as crucial to the future of human-focused design.

The occasion was also graced by several leading lights of the design and architecture fraternity, who acknowledged the remarkable work done by their fellow professionals such as Hafeez Contractor and Brinda Miller.
