International Emmys: A Desi Affair

The 47th International Emmys were nothing short of a true-blue desi affair. The much-awaited award ceremony was held on November 25 at the Hilton Midtown hotel in New York city and honoured the best in film, television and web series.

2019 was indeed a monumental year for India at the International Emmys, with Indian shows and movies earning not one, but three nominations.

The film ‘Lust Stories’ was nominated in the Best TV Movie/Mini Series category while Saif Ali Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui-starrer ‘Sacred Games’ bagged the nomination for Best Drama Series. Radhika Apte, who starred in both the aforementioned shows was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress award.

The who’s who of the Indian film fraternity walked the red carpet and ended up grabbing eyeballs for their unique fashion choices.

Indie star Radhika Apte who has now made her way to the mainstream cinema, walked the red carpet at the International Emmys. Apte, who in 2018, became the poster girl of the popular streaming platform, Netflix, dazzled in a dress made of illusionary and trippy patterns.

The ‘Lust Stories’ star tied her hair back in a sleek bun and wore minimal accessories. The 34-year-old stole the show with her shiny ensemble and even posted a picture wearing the dress on Instagram, all while sipping on some champagne.

Apte was nominated for an Emmy for Best Performance by an Actress for her work in the Indian anthology film, ‘Lust Stories’. The award, however, was won by Hungarian actress, Marina Gera.

The show which took the entire nation by a storm in 2018 and developed a cult fan following, ‘Sacred Games’, rightfully earned an Emmy nomination for their phenomenal work this year. The web television thriller was nominated for Best Drama Series. Team ‘Sacred Games’, sans Saif Ali Khan, walked the red carpet and stole the limelight.

Nawazzudin Siddiqui, who plays the titular character ‘Gaitonde’ on the show, was also in attendance. Siddiqui wore a classic black overcoat with white shirt and a bow tie. Kubbra Sait, who channeled the much-celebrated role of ‘Kukoo’ on the show, was also seen posing with the team which included the directors Anurag Kashyap and Vikramaditya Motwane.

Kubbra wore an off-shoulder, grey gown by Gaurav Gupta and accessorized it with jewellery from Outhouse.

The award for Best Drama Series however, was won by British crime drama television series ‘McMafia’.

So Siddiqui, who played Indian businessman Dilly Mahmood in 'McMafia', didn't have to go home empty-handed. He even posed with his co-stars James Watkins and Dixie Linder.

Amidst the stars who descended the red carpet and made bold fashion choices, the most memorable moment was Bollywood bigwigs posing with the creators of the immensely popular, cult show ‘Game of Thrones’, David Benioff and DB Weiss.

Collectively known on the Internet as ‘D&D’, both Benioff and Weiss were massively trolled by fans of ‘GoT’ earlier this year for a disappointing final season of the show.

Dharma Productions owner and filmmaker Karan Johar along with director Anurag Kashyap posed with the duo at the red carpet.

While Karan wore a decorated Dolce & Gabbana tuxedo, Anurag Kashyap went traditional with a black sherwani and white buttons. The picture went viral on social media in no time with netizens appreciating the unique crossover between the world of Bollywood and ‘Game of Thrones’.

‘Lust Stories’, which stars Kiara Advani, Bhumi Pednekar and Radhika Apte in titular roles, was nominated for Best TV Movie/Mini Series at the 47th International Emmys. The honour, however, was won by Australian Thriller Drama Series, ‘Safe Harbour’.

‘The Remix’, an Indian reality competition web series, featuring Indian singer Sunidhi Chauhan, composer Amit Trivedi and Indian electronic dance producer, Nucleya was India’s entry to the Emmys in Non-Scripted Entertainment category.

The show premiered on Amazon Prime Video in March 2018 and saw contestants remaking popular Bollywood numbers. The show, however, lost to UK’s ‘The Real Full Monty: Ladies’ Night’, where women team up to put on a performance to raise awareness about breast cancer.
