Jiggs Kalra, the czar of Indian cuisine, passes away

Twitterati paid tribute to the culinary legend.

One of the best known names in the Indian culinary scene, Kalra has served Princess Diana and Prince Charles, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Bill Clinton.
The czar of Indian cuisine J Inder Singh Kalra, or Jiggs Kalra as he was fondly known, passed away. Once a journalist, Kalra went on to become a food consultant in the 1980s, and one of the best known names in the Indian culinary scene having served Princess Diana and Prince Charles, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Bill Clinton.

While there has been no official confirmation on his death from family, Twitter was flooded with tributes for the late legend.

He is survived by his son Zorawar Kalra who runs Massive Restaurants Private Limited.

Food critic and EasyDiner co-founder Vir Sanghvi wrote, "Goodbye old friend.The great Jiggs Kalra who did so much to rediscover the lost secrets of Indian food and who gave chefs their rightful place in the sun goes off to that great kitchen in the sky to ensure that the gods eat his wonderful food.There will never be another Jiggs."



Film-maker Hansal Mehta thanked Kalra for introducing him to Indian food, and shaping his passion for cooking.
