Kunal Bahl got the chance to feature on his favourite show - John Oliver's ‘Last Week Tonight’
Kunal Bahl (L) got a chance to feature on his favourite show - John Oliver's ‘Last Week Tonight’.
Immigration (both legal and illegal) will be a major point of debate going into the 2019 United States elections and everybody wants their say. Last Sunday, late night television host John Oliver addressed the complicated and convoluted United States immigration system and there was a surprising mention of one Indian CEO – Snapdeal’s Kunal Bahl.

Taking viewers through the many hoops that applicants have to jump over to gain citizenship, Oliver used an old clip of Bahl talking about his H-1B visa struggles to demonstrate how even highly skilled people are being turned down for a work visa.

“I’m glad that that story worked out well for India but it’s frankly not a great result for America is it? Who helped educate him and then for some reason, forced him to go innovate somewhere else instead. Honestly I respect Kunal Bahl for not going full on ‘Pretty Woman’ on a US Immigration Office – Big Mistake. Huge,” quipped Oliver.

You can watch the clip below (starting at 9:00):

The clip, which has been taken from a 2014 INKtalk with Lakshmi Pratury, features Bahl sharing the moment he decided to start a company in India.

“I got a job at Microsoft and I was quite happy, you know the Indian tech guy wanting to work at Microsoft,” Bahl can be heard saying in the clip. “And they applied for my visa which got rejected. Now you’re stuck and you’re getting deported back to your country, what do you do?”

While Bahl was over the moon with the unexpected feature on his favourite show, he wasn’t the only one to share the happy news with his followers. Nasscom President Debjani Ghosh also retweeted the news with a “How cool is this!”
