Imtiaz Ali revisits his 2009 hit 'Love Aaj Kal', even retaining the same title, format, and even several similar themes. As he did a decade ago, Ali has again chosen to look at two parallel love stories, set in two different eras. However, the stories are contemporary, and the conflicts of love appear fresh too. And throughout, we see the contrast between small-town love that is difficult and an urban version of love that can be immeasurably more messed-up.

The leading lady Zoe (Khan) is the embodiment of the latter. A young, urban girl, she wants a no-strings attached relationship. She’s even drawn up a five-year plan, time in which she will focus on starting her event management firm before settling down for commitment. Khan is a forceful personality on screen, and looks stunning too, but her performance lacks the complexity the role requires, with the result that you don’t really connect with Zoe.

In the film, Aaryan has to go from being a lovelorn small-town boy to a big-city lover boy, and he pulls this off convincingly. Debutante Arushi Sharma also makes a fine first film. But the show stealer is Hooda who looks dapper in a vintage role. In fact, more than the contemporary tale of love and longing, it’s this thread that makes the film more likeable.

What sets out being a complex tale involving dysfunctional characters in messed-up love falters in a predictable second half.

While it does have its moments, viewers are unlikely to remain spellbound.
