Matthew Wood, creative director, GANT, talks style, sustainability and investing in a set of great pyjamas.

Style tip
“There’s a lot of good to be said about hedonism, especially in times of abundance. But our most common mistakes and failings often arise when we do anything in excess. This is true of our wardrobe. To quote Don Draper – “keep it simple but significant”. Apply this to all that you do. My selection of advice taken from many who have said it far more eloquently is to strive to become the best version of yourself. Not someone else.”

Rest assured
“A must have are great pyjamas. There’s not enough said about a good night’s sleep. Often, we talk about sleep with false machismo. You hear guys say things like “I can get by with three to four hours sleep”. When in fact sleep is essential for our health and happiness. So, we should pay more attention to this aspect of our lives. Wearing great pyjamas can be one way to help you find your evening ritual and best night’s sleep.”

Cheat sheet: your guide to getting the look
Business meeting: “I think there’s a lot to be said about buying clothes and styling from your footwear up. Your choice of footwear will determine how grounded you feel and affect your energy flow for the day.”

Day to night: “Effortless, co-ordinated, casual yet polished preppy style in refined classic materials and colours never looks out of place at any occasion. Choose a palette that is well considered, fresh and cheerful. Pick textiles, apparel, footwear and accessories that are of high-quality and craftsmanship.”

Club: “Find out if there is a dress code and be respectful of it. Think about what jacket or coat to wear. Wearing a lighter weight jacket or coat could give you the option to skip it all together. In night clubs, think about black light and how it can highlight lint and dandruff, so be well-groomed.

Investment advice
“All purchases should be a form of investment. Excessive consumption feels unethical. Build your own style with a thought for your wardrobe’s longevity. Choose great quality and timelessly modern go-to pieces that you’ll never tire of. This should include a button down shirt, a club blazer, chinos and for the cooler months, a varsity jacket and cable knits.”

A complete kicker
“White sneakers are the most versatile pair of shoes you can own. To put your best foot forward, choose shoes which will last. A pair of good quality, ethically sourced, chrome-free leather shoes in a classic style can be re-soled, re-laced and cleaned up to look new many times over. This is one of the most sustainable choices you can make.”

2019 trends
“Beige is the new grey. Brown is the new black. An earthier colour palette that is warm and embracing, highlighted with joyful pop colours. More choices in pant silhouettes.”
