Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli wears his heart on his sleeve on the field. The 31-year-old is a livewire, animated whether he is batting or fielding. And even though off the field, he may display a zenlike calm, he remains at his core an emotional person.

At a recent event in Mumbai, Kohli was asked if “sporty” and “emotional” are two words that best described him. “I am both,” he said. “I live my life like that. It is not only in sport. I live my life [off the field] in a very raw manner. It is something everyone experiences at some level or the other. For me it is not about concealing them [emotions], it is all about how to live those emotions.”

With 70 international hundreds at just 31 years of age, Kohli has ensured a place in the game’s pantheon. He has won nearly everything. And yet, the moment he remembers as his most ecstatic is the very beginning, when he was selected for India in 2008.

The Delhi man was at home with his mother when he saw his name on the TV screen in the Indian team. His mother Saroj was the only other person at home at that time.

“I had no idea what to do,” said Kohli, dressed in maroon T-shirt, faded blue jeans, black blazer and white sneakers. “I went berserk. There was no synchronisation. I did not know whether to sit, stand, jump, nothing... The starting point is what stands out for me. That gives you clarity, that gives you vision, that gives you motivation.”

More than a decade since that day, Kohli leads the Indian national cricket team in all formats. “My mom was very proud. Who would not be?” he said. “It was just me and my mom [at home, when the team was announced]. That realisation of how things have come together…. As much as I try to explain it, I can feel it when I say it right now. But I can’t put it in words enough. It is only the experience of these things that help me stay grounded.”.
