MUMBAI: The mystery behind Urjit Patel's twitter handle is quite intriguing. How does the man who hesitates to speak in press conferences is on social media? The amazing fact is that he just follows one - himself, which is the official account of the RBI.

The twitterati have been thronging in thousands to follow an unverified twitter account of RBI Governor-designate Dr Urjit Patel. Hours before the news of his appointment spread the handle @UrjitPatel_ was followed by less than 500 people.

Such is the world of twitter that within hours of his announcement the account has notched over 9000 users and is increasing at a rapid pace. The account does not have a blue tick which simply means it is not verified by twitter. It could not be confirmed whether or not the account actually belonged to Dr Patel.

Couple of hours after Patel's appointment as the new RBI governor a tweet thanking everyone for their warm wishes was tweeted from that account.

"Thank you everyone for your warm wishes! I will give my best to live up to the expectation of people,” the tweet read. The tweet has been liked by over 2000 people and been retweeted over 1000 times.

The twitter followers surged further after finance minister Arun Jaitley congratulated Patel and tagged his unverified account.

“Congratulations to @UrjitPatel_ on being appointed as Governor of RBI. I'm sure he will successfully lead the Reserve Bank & contribute to India's economic development,” Jaitley’s tweet said.

Revenue secretary Hasmukh Adhia too used Patel’s unverified twitter account to extend his best wishes. “Congratulations to @UrjitPatel_ on becoming RBI Governor. I wish him all the best. I called up @UrjitPatel_ and conveyed my best wishes to him,” Adhia tweeted.
