PM Modi pays tribute to legal luminary Arun Jaitley, BCCI mourns former VP

Jaitley was admitted to AIIMS on August 9 following complaints of breathlessness and palpitations.

Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley passed away on Saturday at AIIMS.
Former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley passed away on Saturday at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi. He was 66. The BJP veteran will be cremated at the Nigambodh Ghat, New Delhi, today.

The news of the Jaitley's demise shook the entire nation, and saw condolences pouring in on Twitter from Bollywood celebrities, politicians and business leaders. The first few who tweeted in his memory were Prime Minister Narendra Modi, actor-turned-MP Sunny Deol and actor Riteish Deshmukh.

Through a series of tweets, PM Modi remembered Jaitley as a towering intellectual and legal luminary with a great sense of humour. He wrote about losing a valued friend who left behind innumerable happy memories.

Minister of textiles Smriti Irani paid tribute to Jaitley on Twitter. She remembered him as a great leader who served the nation with immense dedication and zeal.

RPG Enterprises Chairman Harsh Goenka paid tribute to the outstanding parliamentarian who, he said, was one of the creators of modern BJP.

Mahindra and Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra, on Twitter, prayed for Jaitley. The top boss called the former minister a man who lived by his convictions and dedicated his life to the country.

Singer Lata Mangeshkar, deeply saddened by Jaitley's demise, called him a dynamic leader and a thorough gentleman. While sharing pictures with him, she looked back at the time when the two sat together for a chat.

Deol, the BJP MP from Gurdaspur, mourned the loss of another great leader. Deshmukh expressed grief on his demise and shared condolences with his family.

Director Karan Johar also mourned the death of a strong leader on Twitter.

Actor Anil Kapoor recalled his first meeting with the veteran politician 20 years ago. Calling himself an admirer of Jaitley, the actor reiterated that the nation suffered a great loss today.

Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) paid tribute to its former Vice President on Twitter. The BCCI also confirmed that the Indian cricket team will don black armbands during the next Test against West Indies in memory of Jaitley.

Captain of the Indian cricket team Virat Kohli prayed for Jaitley's soul. In his tweet, the skipper talked about how the former finance minister was always ready to help people around him.

Legendary cricketer Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli mourned the death of the distinguished parliamentarian who was also a cricket administrator.

Former bastman Virender Sehwag expressed grief on Twitter at the loss of Jaitley. He talked how the former minister provided more opportunities to budding sportsmen and the beautiful relationship they shared.

A saddened Adnan Sami prayed for kind soul Jaitley.

Author Amish Tripathi, devastated by the BJP veteran demise, paid tribute to India's extraordinary son on Twitter.

Minister of Civil Aviation of India Suresh Prabhu remembered India's legal brain, strategist and seasoned politician.

The former Union Minister was admitted to AIIMS on August 9 following complaints of breathlessness, restlessness and palpitations.

Last year, the BJP leader went through a kidney transplant surgery and opted out of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cabinet due to health issues.
