Restaurant Review: Dine in style at Lower Parel's new hip joint The Bombay Canteen
If on a drunken night out, an old Parsi bungalow found its way into the arms of a hip Brooklyn pub, the Bombay Canteen would be their love child.
On stepping in, you leave dusty Lower Parel and find yourself in a place that's charming, comfortable and effortlessly cool. Stained glass windows, an antique bar, and a staircase leading nowhere are some of the elements that you won't get enough of. Much like the lunch they have started to serve up.
Their mid-day specials include Bada Pao Sandwiches, Paratha Rolls and Canteen Tiffin Boxes with dishes that rotate on a weekly basis. The Canteen Tiffin Box comes in three options — Mustard Chicken Curry, Kerala Egg Roast and Sprouted Bean & Paneer Bhurji, each accompanied by a side, salad and sweet dish. We tried the Mustard Chicken Curry (Rs 375), served in an old school stainless steel tiffin box. The meal was wholesome, delicious and didn't induce a nap, ticking all the right boxes when it comes to an office lunch.
(Clockwise from top) Tandoori Pork Bada Pao Sandwich, High Tea Punch, Seafood Bhel
We also tried the Tandoori Pork Bada Pao Sandwich (Rs 250), which we cannot recommend enough. The twice cooked pork with jaggery glaze, perfectly balanced with pickled cucumbers, is flawless. You can also order from their main menu and we think the Chilled Seafood Bhel (Rs 300) from their Chhota section is a great option — cool and full of crunch, it takes bhel to a whole new level. Dessert is not to be missed either with the Guava Tan Tana Tan (Rs 250) making quite the entrance — TBC takes the roadside guava and chili powder treat and works its magic. Genius.
While TBC is already a popular nightspot, if you want to sample the food in peace, lunch is the best time to do it.
