Highlight: AQI of 100 cities

Central Pollution Control Board’s app lets you track hourly air quality in 100 cities and even file complaints.

Air quality index (AQI) are three words that have dominated conversations across north India as smog touched hazardous levels after Diwali.

Amid people going online to check pollution level and deciding whether to wear a mask or not, the Sameer app, developed by the Central Pollution Control Board, has been quite handy -- providing information about AQI levels for more than 100 cities across the country.

The app has a clean user interface and is not difficult to navigate.

There are two ways in which the AQI level is displayed on the app. One is the ‘city list’ format and the other is a ‘map view’ that helps you track air quality across on the map of India.

The listed cities are colour-coded, based on their AQI levels. For example, the city in ‘Severe’ AQI category will be maroon, while the one in ‘Moderate’ category will be yellow. Another feature of the app is the AQI Bulletin that gives you an average of AQI levels over past 24 hours in all the listed cities. However, the app does not provide real-time AQI tracking. The updates are hourly.

Other than monitoring pollution levels, the app can also be used to file or track complaints related to garbage dumping, road dust, vehicular emission or other pollution issues in a particular area. Filing a complaint is easy. You need to select a pollution category, give a description, upload images or videos (if any) and select the region.

There is an ‘Other’ option for a pollution category that is not listed. Once a complaint is filed, the user gets a confirmation mail and message with complaint ID, the assigned officer’s name and number. One can also track the status of the complaint within the app. But there is not time frame as to when the complaint will be addressed.
