On 47th birthday, Sourav Ganguly lands on Instagram; Shikhar Dhawan, Sehwag wish the legend

Twitter was flooded with birthday messages for the 'Prince of Kolkata'.

Former Indian cricket captain and CAB(Cricket Association of Bengal) President Sourav Ganguly cuts an Instagram-shaped cake.
NEW DELHI: Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly who turned 47, on Monday, left fans delighted as he increased his social media presence, joining Instagram.

The Padma Shri recipient was till now active on Facebook, where he has over 600,000 followers, and Twitter, with 4.12 million followers.

The 'God of off-side', now on the photo-sharing platform as @souravganguly, in his first post shared a picture cutting a birthday cake shaped as the site's logo. "As I turn another year older today, I want to make this a year where I give back to my fans. So here’s to birthdays and new beginnings !" he captioned the post.


Through Instagram, the former cricketer aims to engage with young fans by sharing valuable insights on cricketing events and encourage them to join causes close to his heart. In an official statement, Ganguly said, "Reinvention is constantly required in cricket, as it is required in life. From leading India on the field, to commentary, to advising an IPL team, to now joining Instagram, I continue being connected with people who're passionate about this amazing sport."

At the time of writing this, Dada - as he's fondly known - had amassed 53.3k followers, and was following only 6 accounts including Harbhajan Singh, Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli, Shikhar Dhawan apart from ICC and Team India's official handles.

Happy Birthday, Dada

'Prince of Kolkata' and 'God of off-side' are just phrases that try to define the legend that Sourav Ganguly is. Fondly known as 'Dada', Ganguly is considered as one of the greatest captains in the history of Indian cricket. An incredibly-gifted player, Ganguly's 16-year cricketing career boasts of 311 ODIs where he scored 11,363 runs. The man who stands as the third-highest run-scorer for India in ODIs, has 22 centuries and 72 half-centuries in his name, in the limited-overs format. The former skipper, who hung his boots from the game in 2008, has groomed several of India's finest players including Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh and Virender Sehwag. After quitting the game 11 years ago, Dada went on to make his mark in other fields of life. Today, as the legend of Indian cricket turns 47, here's a peek at what Dada did after retiring from all forms of cricket.

Meanwhile, Twitter was flooded with messages for the 'Prince of Kolkata', as former teammates wished him.

Sachin Tendulkar, who has joined Ganguly in the commentary box at the ongoing World Cup, brought out the nostalgia, posting an old picture of the duo, with the caption, "Happy Birthday Dadi! From playing with you in our Under-15 days to now commentating with you. It’s been quite a journey. Have a great year ahead!"



Virender Sehwag, wishing his 'Captain', laid emphasis on the number 56, which is Ganguly's World Cup average and also the multiple of his birth date and month.


Former teammate VVS Laxman also tweeted pictures with Dada.


Calling him the man 'who brought about a fantastic transition in Indian cricket, a brilliant leader who backed guys he believed in to the fullest', Mohammad Kaif wished Ganguly.


Shikhar Dhawan wished the 'leader of the pack', while Ishant Sharma called him 'the greatest pillar' in Indian cricket, and thanked him for his guidance



Suresh Raina also joined his industry colleagues in wishing the legend.
