Everyone has a personal interpretation of spirituality. Priya Agarwal Hebbar, daughter of billionaire Anil Agarwal and independent director, Vedanta, has an interesting one — the call of the wild.

“For me, a nice way to connect with a higher power and spirituality is through wildlife,” said Agarwal. “I make it a point to visit one of the tiger reserves or national parks either in India or abroad every couple of months. Those two to three days in the jungle, roaming around in the car is pure bliss for me. Being one with nature is everything to do with spirituality.”

Her favourite jungle experience in the country so far, she said, was at the tiger reserve at Bandhavgarh in Madhya Pradesh. “In India, I tend to frequent the tiger sanctuaries. That said, Kaziranga [in Assam] for the rhinos was beautiful too. I also want to go to the North sometime to see the snow leopards. That’s on my to-do list,” she said.

Her visit to Rwanda to track and see the gorillas has also left an impression.

While Agarwal finds interactions with animals a spiritual experience, it’s not something other members of her family share. “No one in my family is that much of a pet lover but I was born with this need to be around animals all the time,” she said.

And when the solitude of forests is not an option, she seeks solace in the chaos of her personal sanctuary at home. Agarwal shares her home with three dogs [a labrador, a French bulldog and a Husky, who have all been adopted from the animal shelter she runs] and a stray cat.

“It’s chaos. All four of them share a perfect sibling relationship. There is lots of fighting but there is lots of fun and love,” she said.
