Comedy legend Jerry Seinfeld will play two shows in Mumbai this March at the Stage42 festival, a new venture by OML and NH7, which will mark Seinfeld's first ever performance in Asia.

"I have always been fascinated by India and its culture," Seinfeld said. "I have great respect for its people and their way of life. It is a great honour for me to be invited to come there and make fun of it in person."

Says Arjun Ravi, Co-Founder, NH7. in, "For many of us, our introduction to comedy was Seinfeld. He's a comedian whose influence is impossible to understate, and it's a matter of pride that we will be bringing this global icon to India for the first time." The visit has been years in the making.

Arjun says, "We've really been pushing for it for years now. Basically, once all the technical bits are sorted out, such as the finances, equipment and logistics from both ends, it's smooth sailing. (Laughs) Well it's actually never smooth sailing — that's one thing we have learnt in the entertainment industry."

Arjun says he hasn't spoken to Seinfeld much, but knows he is curious about India. "He is touring Asia for the first time, it's something new to him so he is quite keen to see the response from the crowds. It seems the whole of Asia is excited and we are getting calls from everywhere!"

And even though the man who wore a puffy pirate shirt in a Seinfeld episode is only here for two days, the team bringing him down is making sure he experiences what India is all about. Arjun says, "While he hasn't mentioned anything in particular, you can be sure we'll be showing him some good old-fashioned Indian hospitality. But I am pretty sure he will want to check out a few cultural sites, even though it may be difficult since he's only down for two days."

After the recent comedy roast and the subsequent issues that arose, are the organisers taking any precautions about the material? Arjun says, "No way — we don't give a brief to any of our artists."

Show info

Tickets to the Jerry Seinfeld shows go on sale at 12 noon on February 13. Tickets start at Rs 7,500 and will be available on Insider.in Dates: Saturday, March 14, 9 pm, and Sunday, March 15, 9 pm, at the Sardar Vallabhai Patel Stadium, NSCI, Mumbai.

Local comics are pumped

Vir Das says, "The news is just awesome. I think he has influenced every single comic. His observational humour is amazing and as an observational comic myself, you can really appreciate the clean humour."

Anuvab Pal says, "It is superb! I grew up watching Seinfeld and love his style of taking everyday things and making them epic. I think he opened up a world of this kind of comedy. While I prefer his show over his stand up routine, I think he is a genius."

Biswa Kalyan Rath, Pretentious Movie Reviews says, "I think it is insane! It will be his first time in India and I can't wait to see how the crowd reacts to him. I have already booked my ticket in the front row." .
