Nandan Nilekani returned to Infosys after a gap of eight years. And a lot has changed in the industry since then, as Nilekani himself pointed out a while ago. The Infosys co-founder was giving the keynote speech at IIT Madras some time back, when he probed this topic further.

“The auto sector has been dominated by a few large companies from around the world for many decades. But with the arrival of shared mobility, with the arrival of the Ubers and Olas of the world, with the arrival of electric cars and the autonomous driving cars, you have simultaneously three different changes happening to the automotive industry,” he said.

The life-long entrepreneur added that the same thing happened to the advertising business in the last 10-20 years.

“Most of the advertising is going digital. When Amazon bought Whole Foods recently, the price of all the retail stocks went down. People wondered about the impact of this on retail sector. So as you go industry by industry, you see dramatic changes,” Nilekani said.

The bottomline is: Be prepared for a world where there will be a lot of new winners, and there is going to be a lot of change.
