American sportswear and apparel company Under Armour is almost 24 years old now and they have a global presence. The India operations started in earnest mid 2019 through a fully owned subsidiary. One way to take the fight to the established competitors is to offer something different. They certainly have the first mover advantage with these digitally connected smart running shoes.

Our review is based on HOVR Phantom SE. You can get it in Black, Canyon Green, Petrol Blue, Onyx White, Silt Brown or Aruba Red. But the highlight is not the snazzy design or colours. There are Bluetooth modules built into each shoe. You're probably wondering if you need to charge your shoes now. You never have to charge them at all actually. We initially thought that energy for the Bluetooth modules would be provided by your steps but that's not the case.
Using your phone's GPS, Under Armour HOVR Phantom SE can also plot out your run on a map.

Under Armour uses BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) modules with built in accelerometer/gyro sensors and a fixed battery. They call it the Record Sensor and the battery is designed to outlast the shoe itself. When not in use (the sensors detect that), they go into deep sleep mode that doesn't use up any battery power. It's all weather sealed so there's nothing to pry open. In fact, if you try to remove the Record Sensor, you might end up destroying the shoe!

Obviously, you will need to download the app - MapMyRun - available on iOS and Android. For the first time, there's a pairing process. You may need to tap the shoes to 'wake' them from deep sleep before pairing. And it's not just the steps that the shoes can measure - they calculate your stride length, cadence (spm or strides per minute), pace, duration of workout and calories burnt. Using your phone's GPS, it can also plot out your run on a map. If you use your headphones, you can get personalised coaching advice, motivation and tips while you run. You can also earn badges as you complete certain milestones, compete with friends, take part in challenges and interact with a large community. But the best part is that you don't need to carry your phone if you don't want to. Go for your run or workout without a phone and the sensors record the information and relay it back to the app when connected. Despite all this tech, the shoes are incredibly lightweight - just 300 grams per shoe. You might even forget that you're wearing them!

There's a fair bit of tech in the shoe design itself. The company's patented HOVR foam provides a 'zero gravity feel' & enhanced energy return. The midfoot is 3D moulded and has laser perforations for ventilation. The upper is a secure knit fabric (they call it Warp Knit) that stretches and flexes around your foot. We found them to be incredibly secure without feeling tight. The knobbed texture on the rubber outsole is very confidence inspiring in all kinds of road surface too. For a gearhead who's also into fitness and running, smart connected shoes are a great way to train. We highly recommend Under Armour's HOVR Phantom SE for their usefulness, accuracy, functionality and design.
