What's for dinner? 48% Indians opt to order-in, say it's more economical than hiring a cook at home

The top reasons for people ordering-in include convenience, breaking the monotony and celebrating a special occasion.

Love a delicious pizza in bed while watching your favourite movie? Or need a weekly dose of biryani for lunch at office? You are not alone. 48 per cent Indians like to order their favourite food and dine-in, as compared to the 34 per cent that prefer going out for a meal, according to a research report by Uber Eats.

Convenience plays a major role in people's decision to get food delivered to their doorstep, with almost 28 per cent Indians citing this to be the reason they order-in. Easy-to-eat, all-in-one meal bowls have become increasingly popular, with almost 1 in 3 customers opting for them.

Even idea of date night has seen a shift, and over 36 per cent meals ordered at home are shared with partners.

Special occasions account for 16 per cent of people opting for deliveries, but it's not always about monumental occasions, catching up with friends, family, and colleagues was also reason enough for 10 per cent Indians to order a scrumptious meal at home. Meanwhile, 28 per cent just want to break the monotony of home-cooked food.

Ordering food at home is no longer contained to occasions and get-togethers, rather it is now a part of 'solo me time' as well. Almost 19 per cent of Indians choose to get their favourite food delivered to the comfort of their homes, as they spent quality time unwinding by themselves.

The 'Food Moods of India' report also suggested that experimentation is not customers' strong suit when it comes to food, rather they prefer to go the 'tried and tested' way. 82 per cent respondents claimed to sticking to a maximum of 5 restaurants for their food deliveries.

And when it came to picking a favourite cuisine, North Indian and biryani scored big among adults. For the younger lot, 'desi' Chinese and pizzas were a popular choice.

The financially-independent, money-smart millennials also feel that ordering food is an economical choice. About half of the respondents said that getting food delivered was a wiser decision than hiring a cook, which proves be both expensive and tedious.

Throwing light on the rise in popularity of food-delivery, Uber Eats partnered with global market research firm IPSOS for the research that seeks to answer 'Why India eats' rather than 'What India eats'.
