JAIPUR: Scanty rains in Rajasthan proved to be blessing in disguise for Bajra crop. Early arrivals are indicating a bumper crop this season. Since the crop needs less irrigation, farmers have shifted to Bajra fromother crops like Paddy and Maize. According to agriculture department, the acreage of Bajra is likely to be increased by 50% due to weak monsoon. The acreage for the crop was estimated at 45 lakh ha this year. But the late shift of farmers to this crop due to weak monsoon has increased the acreage to around 60 lakh ha, an agriculture department official said.

Traders are also expecting good yield this season. Looking at the standing crop and the acreage, we are expecting the production to cross 100 lakh tonnes level. Last year the production was 80 lakh tonnes when the acreage was 51 lakh ha, said Rakesh Khandelwal of Khandelwal Corporation.

However, the production of Guar is likely to dip but not so drastically. As against the estimated 25 lakh ha, the sowing has been done over 18 lakh ha only. The crop needs 3 good spells and 4-5 average spells of rain. Around 50% of the standing guar crop was likely to be damaged due to scant rain. But he extent of damage has been reduced due to the late revival of monsoon. The production is likely to dip by 30-35% as against the earlier estimation of 50-60%,the agriculture department official said.
