Hi there, welcome to ETMarkets’ Investors Guide, a show about asset classes, market trends and investment opportunities. I am Saloni Goel.

Benchmark equity indices climbed nearly 8 per cent in July despite a record spike in Covid-19 cases, taking their total gains to over 40 per cent since March 24, when BSE Sensex hit its 52-week low of 25,639. Each and every stock in the Sensex pack has delivered solid returns to investors in last four months. M&M and RIL have soared in excess of 100 per cent. HCL Technologies, Infosys, Sun Pharma and Bajaj Auto have gained more than 50 per cent.

But the red flag has gone up since, most analysts feel market valuations are getting overstretched. Data shows the price-to-earnings ratio of Nifty now hovers around 29 times against a 10-year average of 22 times.
