Market Now: Over 50 stocks hit fresh 52-week highs defying a dull market

The Nifty50 index was trading 20 points lower at 10,275.

NEW DELHI: Over 50 stocks, including Bank of Baroda, Bank of India and Bharat Forge hit fresh 52-week highs on NSE in Thursday's trade, defying the bearish market temperament.

Bharti Airtel, Birla Corporation, Canara Bank, Century Textiles & Industries, Delta Corp, GAIL (India), Gujarat State Fertilizers & Chemicals, ICICI Bank, NCC, Punjab National Bank, Steel Authority of India, State Bank of India, Tata Steel, United Breweries and Vedanta were the other major stocks that hit a fresh 52-week high today.

On the contrary, nearly 15 stocks, including Arcotech, Diamond Power Infra, Dynamatic Technologies, Khaitan Electricals, Reliance Communications and Tara Jewels hit fresh 52-week lows on NSE.

Weak Asian cues and selling in IT, FMCG and private bank stocks kept the bourses under pressure. Investors appeared cautious ahead of October derivatives contracts expiry today.

The Nifty50 index was trading 20 points lower at 10,275, while the 30-share Sensex was 98 points down at 32,945 around 10.35 am (IST).

Shares of Bharat Petroleum Corporation, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation, Indian Oil Corporation, Larsen & Toubro, Hindalco and State Bank of India were trading as the top gainers in the Nifty50 index.

However, Indiabulls Housing Finance, Power Grid Corporation, HCL Tech, HDFC, ICICI Bank and Asian Paints were the top losers among the Nifty stocks.

On the NSE, 809 stocks were advancing, compared with 778 stocks declining and 376 stocks remaining unchanged.
