Rajya Sabha secretariat warns MPs against multiple train bookings

    Synopsis

Rajya Sabha Secretary General Desh Deepak Verma has said in a parliamentary bulletin that “multiple bookings are being made by some members in various trains departing from same/different stations to different destination stations for the same day”. This was found in the details of debit claims raised by the Ministry of Railways.

New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha secretariat has found that some MPs have been booking tickets for different destinations for travel on the same day but not cancelling those tickets which were not availed. MPs are entitled to free air-conditioned first class train travel with spouse and an AC Tier-II ticket for a member of his or her staff.

Rajya Sabha Secretary General Desh Deepak Verma has said in a parliamentary bulletin that “multiple bookings are being made by some members in various trains departing from same/different stations to different destination stations for the same day”.

This was found in the details of debit claims raised by the Ministry of Railways.

“Rajya Sabha secretariat has to make payments to the Ministry of Railways even for those bookings which are actually not utilised by the members,” Verma said.

Non-performance of journey on reserved berths and non-cancellation of tickets which are not to be availed leads to “unnecessary expenditure and avoidable drain on Rajya Sabha budget”, the official noted. This also deprives other people from getting confirmed berths.

Section 6(1) and 6B (1) of Salary, Allowances and Pension of Members of Parliament Act, 1954 allows MPs to free train travel.

Section 6(1) states that MP shall be provided with one free non-transferable first class AC or executive class of any train pass which “entitles him to travel at any time by any railway in India”.

The MP’s spouse can avail of this facility while travelling with him. An air-conditioned two-tier class railway pass will also be provided to a person accompanying the MP.

MPs are high in the pecking order when it comes to getting confirmed train tickets.

The secretariat has requested the MPs to cancel all such bookings which are not likely to be utilised, well in advance.

“In case of non-cancellation of bookings which are not actually utilised by the members, the amount of fare of such bookings shall be recovered from members,” Verma said.

Please stop giving unlimited free tickets. Restrict it to 12 round tickets a year. Anyway these people make enough money by fair as well as unfair means. Free tickets are paid by govt which are all tax payers money. Enough of this nonsense.
