Fair price shops in Kolkata to sell onions at Rs 59/kg

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has instructed the state government’s supply chain and sales point known as Sufal Bangla to market onions at a maximum of Rs 59 per kg. The state government will not only subsidise the price of onion but also bear the cost of transportation, distribution and losses in transit.

Fair price shops in Kolkata will sell onions from today to make the vegetable available to the common people at a reasonable price.

Onions will be available at all the 935 fair price shops at Rs 59 per kg per family from Monday in Kolkata.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has instructed the state government’s supply chain and sales point known as Sufal Bangla to market onions at a maximum of Rs 59 per kg.

The state government will not only subsidise the price of onion but also bear the cost of transportation, distribution and losses in transit.

Pinching hard on consumers' pockets, retail onion prices have surpassed the Rs 200 per kg mark in most cities across the country and in some places it is ruling at Rs 140/kg, as per the official data maintained by the Consumer Affairs Ministry.
