The tax department has started questioning top companies and banks if they were passing on some of the common costs like salaries of chief executives to their branch offices. The department wants companies to proportionately distribute common costs from head office to branch offices and treat this as a supply. Once this is treated as a supply, 10% of it has to be added to the cost and 18% Goods and Services Tax (GST) could be levied on the total amount. ET's Sachin Dave reports. (Text: ET Bureau)
