MAHARAJGANJ: Former finance minister P Chidambaram on Friday did a hard sell of the Congress promise of Nyay minimum income guarantee scheme, promising Rs 72,000 a year to 50 million poor families, in Maharajganj, one of the most backward districts of the country.

“Prime Minister Narendra Modi has no answer to our Nyay promise,” Chidambaram said. “He is stunned and never knew such a scheme could be done. So he is ridiculing our scheme.”

Addressing a gathering in Maharajganj—from where Congress has fielded former journalist Supriya Shrinate—Chidambaram claimed the only manifesto being spoken about among the people was that of Congress. “Does anyone even talk about the BJP manifesto? Everyone has forgotten about it as nothing is there in it. Even Modi does not speak of BJP's manifesto,” he said.

Chidambaram’s visit is part of the efforts by Congress to raise awareness about Nyay in states like Uttar Pradesh. He impressed upon people that states like Uttar Pradesh and backward districts like Maharajganj will benefit the most from Nyay, given most beneficiaries are here.

“Remember if Modi comes back, there will be no Nyay,” the former finance minister said. “He (Modi) will give money, like he has to the tune of Rs 84,585 crore to seven companies that went into insolvency, or plan a bullet train from Ahmedabad to Mumbai like he has at the cost of Rs 1.10 lakh crore. Support Supriya, our candidate, vote for Congress and we will create jobs here.”.

Shrinate was the executive editor of ET NOW, the sister channel of this newspaper, before she quit to enter the electoral fray.
