Srinagar Polls to Test Democracy’s Appeal
Srinagar: Two years after Srinagar Lok Sabha bypolls made news for the wrong reasons, democracy's appeal will be put to test in this constituency with over 12 lakh voters on April 18. The Srinagar Lok Sabha bypoll, necessitated after PDP leader Tariq Hamid Karra resigned from the lower house of Parliament, was marred by violence and saw the lowest ever voter turnout of 7.2%. Nine persons were killed in security forces' action against protestors in different parts of the constituency and an Army officer used a shawl weaver as a human shield to save his men from a stone-pelting mob on polling day.
This year, stringent security measures have been put in place to prevent any untoward incidents. Additional security personnel have been deployed in the three districts - Srinagar, Ganderbal and Budgam - that make up the Srinagar Lok Sabha seat.
BJD-BJP Faceoff in Bargarh LS seat
Bargarh: With the Congress fielding a greenhorn, Bargarh Lok Sabha seat is witnessing an intense battle between two heavyweights of the ruling BJD and the opposition BJP. The grand old party has pitted Pradip Debata, a businessman, against BJD stalwart and sitting Rajya Sabha member Prasanna Acharya, and BJP national secretary Suresh Pujari in the backward constituency in western Odisha. Fighting his maiden electoral battle, Debata is facing a tough fight at the hustings as both Pujari and Acharya are known for their oratory skills and political experience.
Oppn Parties to Move SC for 50% Paper Trail Verification
New Delhi: Raising doubts over the credibility of EVMs, a number of opposition parties on Sunday said they will move the Supreme Court again to demand verification of at least 50% of votes by paper trail.
Opposition parties, including the Congress, Telugu Desam Party (TDP), Samajwadi Party, CPI and CPI(M), jointly addressed a press conference to highlight the issue of transparency in the election process and protection of voter rights with a call to “save democracy”. Delhi Chief Minister and AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of “programming” electronic voting machines to win the Lok Sabha elections, while his Andhra Pradesh counterpart Chandrababu Naidu said 21 political parties have demanded verification of VVPAT paper trails of 50% of the EVMs.
Political Rift in Jadeja Family
Jamnagar: A month after Ravindra Jadeja's wife joined the BJP, the cricketer's father and sister joined the Congress in Gujarat on Sunday in the presence of party leader and Patidar quota spearhead Hardik Patel. Jadeja's father, Anirudhsinh, and sister, Nainaba, joined the Congress at an election rally in Kalavad city of Jamnagar district. Jadeja hails from Jamnagar and the Congress candidate for Jamnagar Lok Sabha seat, Mulu Kandoriya, was also present. The Chennai Super Kings all-rounder's wife, Rivaba, had joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on March 3 in Jamnagar in the presence sitting MP Poonamben Maadam, who was renominated by the saffron party.
