CHANDAULI: The Samajwadi Party has fielded Janwadi Party chief Sanjay Chauhan as its nominee from Chandauli in an attempt to get the additional backing of the ‘most backward caste’ of Chauhan or Nonia while the ruling BJP is seeking to woo SP’s traditional Yadav supporters.

Chauhan faces the BJP’s state president and sitting MP Mahendra Nath Pandey in the constituency which accommodates Varanasi district’s two assembly seats, Ajagara and Shivpuri, and has a high population of Yadavs, Dalits and Muslims. While the SP won this seat in 1999 and 2009, the BSP won in 2004.

In order to field Chauhan, the SP denied ticket to its veteran member and former MP Ram Kishun, who is now campaigning in favour of Chauhan.

“As per our feedback, there is disappointment among a section of Yadavs,” a BJP member told ET on condition of anonymity.

“We have identified the areas which have presence of such Yadav voters. The BJP is trying to woo them.”

On Tuesday, the BJP organised a roadshow of its new Yadav face and Bhojpuri film actor Dinesh Lal Yadav alias Nirahua – who is the party’s candidate against SP’s chief Akhilesh Yadav in Azamgarh – in Deendayal Nagar (formerly Mughalsarai) of Chandauli Lok Sabha seat. Besides, state minister Girish Yadav of the BJP continues to visit Yadav-dominated areas.

The BJP is banking on the appeal of government schemes such as Ujjawla, Saubhagya, Swachh Bharat programme, Pradhan Mantri housing schemes and PM-Kisan income support scheme. “We have a list of beneficiaries of such government schemes.

Our teams continue to approach voters who gave a good response,” said Anil Gupta, who is co-convenor of the BJP for Varanasi area.

The BJP has also formed several teams to woo Scheduled Caste voters, especially from Sonkar and Paswan communities. BJP leader Aparajita Sonkar, who is chairman of Varanasi Zila Panchayat, is touring different parts of Chandauli seat.
