RBI asks large UCBs to implement system-based asset classification from June 2021

  • The Reserve Bank has asked large urban cooperative banks (UCBs) to undertake the system-based asset classification from June 30, 2021, to improve efficiency and transparency.
  • The UCBs having total assets of over Rs 2,000 crore as on March 31, 2020, will be required to implement the system-based asset classification.
  • UCBs having total assets of over Rs 1,000 crore but less than Rs 2,000 crore as on March 31, 2020 and having self-assessed themselves as being under Level III or Level IV on the Comprehensive Cyber Security Framework will be required to implement system-based asset classification from September 30, 2021.
  • RBI has also asked all concerned UCBs to conduct pilot/parallel run and evaluate the results for accuracy/integrity of the asset classification in compliance with the RBI instructions.

India-Bangladesh building maritime ties to easily ship goods to NorthEast India

  • Shipping goods from Kolkata to northeastern states is costlier and time-consuming. The 'chicken's neck' or the 22-km wide Siliguri corridor is the only land-based connection to northeastern states of India.
  • However, with the strengthening of India's maritime ties with neighbouring Bangladesh, the goods are easily being transported through the Chattogram (Chittagong) Port.
  • The first trial container ship from Kolkata to Agartala through Chattogram port was launched by the Shipping Minister Mansukh Madaviya on July 16.
  • It was termed as a historic move as this sea route will open a new chapter in the India-Bangladesh maritime relations by allowing use of Chattogram and Mongla ports for transit of goods from India.

Money laundering: I-T raids on Chinese individuals, Indian contacts continue for second day

  • The department, official sources said, has seized a number of documents and computer peripherals and has recovered about Rs 60-70 lakh cash from multiple premises in the Delhi-NCR region till now.
  • The tax sleuths raided at least two dozen premises in Delhi, Gurgaon and Ghaziabad on Tuesday as part of the action under which it covered the Chinese, some of their Indian associates and bank officials, the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) had said in a statement.
  • The department is questioning several people and is in the process to freeze a number of bank accounts linked to the accused and some dubious companies floated and operated by them, the sources said.

  • The Assam government on Wednesday announced that a minimum sum of Rs 830 per month would be deposited in the bank account of a woman member of a poor family under its 'Orunodoi' scheme.
  • Addressing a press conference here Finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said the state government aims to reach out to nearly 17 lakh families through this Direct Benefit Grant (DBG).
  • The state budget had already earmarked Rs 2,800 crore for 'Orunodoi' and it plans to spend Rs 210 crore each month under this scheme.
