The Centre has invited bids for appointing a project management consultant for supervision and quality control of construction of the Rs 75 crore ‘Amethi Bypass’ project, whose foundation stone was laid by Rajnath Singh, Nitin Gadkari and Yogi Adityanath in March this year before the Lok Sabha election.
The road is to be completed in 18 months once work starts. The BJP had been stressing during the election campaign that the road would be delivered to Amethi by the party and accused Gandhi of failing to do so despite being an MP for three terms and the Congress being in power for a decade since 2004.
The new bypass will be constructed as a national highway and the existing road, which is narrow and potholed, will be widened. In July last year, pictures had emerged of Gandhi trying to travel on this stretch in his sports utility vehicle, but he could not go beyond 500 meters given the bad condition of the road. The existing stretch was built in 2009 under the BSP government in the state but never completed or maintained. A renewed effort was made under Irani to revive the project on the demand of locals.
