MUMBAI: BJP’s core committee members in Maharashtra comprising Devendra Fadnavis, Pankaja Munde and Girish Mahajan among others met party chief Amit Shah. In the nine-hour-long meeting, BJP brass has okayed a seat sharing formula that would see the party contesting on less number of seats than it was planning to.

According to BJP leaders, Sena will get 126 and BJP will contest close to 144-150 seats while the rest will go to the allies. BJP will also give up the deputy chief minister’s post. It remains to be seen how much BJP will allocate seats from its quota as there was pressure on the party to contest on more seats.

BJP leaders said the meeting took long precisely because a sizeable section of the party was not keen on giving so many seats to Sena, especially as the latter had won just 63 seats whereas the BJP had won 122 seats in the 2014 Maharashtra assembly polls. Fadnavis has strongly been advocating that the party needs to be in an alliance with Sena as the latter has been an old ally and that fighting the elections alone is fraught with risks. The Chief Minister has also informed the party that fighting alone could also mean giving a new life to Congress and NCP.

The BJP leadership is slated to finalise the deal with Sena. A joint announcement is expected on Sunday.
