Crediting Vinayak Damodar Savarkar for calling the 1857 rebellion as India’s first independence struggle, Home Minister Amit Shah said had it not been for him, the rebellion of 1857 would have become history and India would have seen it from the British point of view. Shah’s statement comes after the BJP in its poll manifesto demanded the PM Narendra Modi-led NDA government confer the Bharat Ratna - the nation's highest civilian honour - on Veer Savarkar.
