Assam cabinet approves Assam bamboo and cane policy

According to the state government, the policy aims at sustainable development and utilization of bamboo and cane resources in the state of Assam through scientific management and stakeholders’ participation.

GUWAHATI: Assam cabinet on Tuesday has approved Assam Bamboo and Cane Policy.

According to the state government, the policy aims at sustainable development and utilization of bamboo and cane resources in the state of Assam through scientific management and stakeholders’ participation.

The policy aims at protection and conservation of biodiversity, enhancement of resources and improvement of productivity, promotion of traditional and modern bamboo based industries, enhancing employment opportunity and livelihood security for the local people and development of effective marketing for bamboo and cane-based products.

The conservation of resources in both forest and non forest areas through sustainable harvesting cultivation in non forest areas especially in farmer’s field, community land, wasteland through farmers and community participation, transfer of technology through skill development, organisation of exhibition and workshop and exposure visits, post harvest and treatment facilities, inventory, data collection and research, encouragement of entrepreneurs, development of infrastructure/ cluster, providing proper market linkages.

The policy provided for incentives have been provided for the establishment of various bamboo-based industries, processing units and development of traditional sectors like handicraft and furniture making. The skill development has also been focussed. The state will facilitate in providing direct market linkages to the entrepreneurs and artisans. The establishment of Bamboo Market, Rural ‘haats’ and other infrastructure will be promoted.
