Bajrang Dal to hold week-long Dalit outreach

The proposed campaign comes in the backdrop of the recent Lok Sabha election, which saw a large chunk of Dalits voting for the BJP.
New Delhi: Bajrang Dal, the youth wing of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), plans to organise a week-long ‘Samarasta Sankalp’ (social harmony) campaign in August to reach out to the Dalit community, which has been the target of a number of attacks in different parts of the country.

The organisation is aiming for inclusion of Dalits in the larger Hindu narrative and wants to reduce social discrimination based on caste, said Bajrang Dal members. They said the dates for the campaign will decided at the organisation’s two-day annual meeting in Dwarka on July 27-28.

The proposed campaign comes in the backdrop of the recent Lok Sabha election, which saw a large chunk of Dalits voting for the BJP in defiance of regional caste equations. Now both the party and its mentor, the RSS, want to strengthen this support base, especially since the parties that have traditionally counted the community among its supporters have lost ground.

“It is our annual meeting where we prepare our work agenda and plan for the entire year,” said Sohan Solanki, national convener, Bajrang Dal. “Every year we organise such programmes against social evils in Hindu society. There is nothing more in this year’s programme.”
