Labour minister Bandaru Dattatreya will hold a meeting with a dozen central trade union representatives on July 18 to apprise them of ministry’s progress on the unions’ 12-point charter of demand.

The meeting, which has been scheduled on the onset of the monsoon session of Parliament, is rather seen as an exercise to seek the support for passage of key labour amendment bills lined up by the ministry as not much progress has been made on their demands pending with this government for more than two years now.

The key bills being readied by the ministry for laying in the upcoming Parliament session include amendment to the Maternity Benefits Act, 1961, amendment to the Workmen Compensation Act, amendments to the Employees’ Provident Fund & Miscellaneous Provision Act and the Labour Code on Wages while the amendments to the Child Labour Act is already pending in Rajya Sabha.

“Labour minister has invited us for a meeting on 18th to discuss the 12 point charter of demand,” DL Sachdeva of AITUC said. According to Sachdeva, the government has not done much on most of our demands and have rather gone against the demands.

Some of the 12 demands of the union include the urgent measures by the government to contain price rise, opposition to foreign direct investment in railways, insurance and defence, no amendment to labour laws. Stoppage of disinvestment in central/state public sector undertakings and universal social security cover for all.
